My quilt Bauhaus Brasil<\/em> hung in the 2023 de Young Open<\/a> at San Francisco\u2019s leading museum, a salon-style show recently praised by the New York Times<\/a> as \u201ca dizzying, bursting-at-the-seams extravaganza of an exhibition.\u201d And it is now showing in Geometric Expressions<\/a>, a new virtual gallery presented by Studio Art Quilt Associates<\/a> (SAQA).<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
Two of my quilts are currently in international SAQA<\/a> shows; another is traveling in a regional SAQA exhibition, and my quilt Betwixt & Between<\/em> is among the pieces featured in SAQA\u2019s Art Quilt Quarterly (Issue No. 31).<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
I am a regular online exhibitor with the Textile Study Group of New York<\/a>, and my work has also appeared in QuiltCon 2020 and 2019, Form and Function at the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles, and solo and group exhibitions at Bay Quilts (Richmond, CA), as well as local and regional shows in the San Francisco Bay area.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
I find inspiration in the architecture of New York City and the landscape of the Bay Area; in the quilts of Gwen Marston; in the creativity of my quilting circle, and in the work of other modern quilters. In my current quilt-design experiments, I have begun pairing simple geometric shapes with improvisational construction techniques. The quilts Bravo Bulc\u00e3o<\/em><\/a>, Ode to Tomatoes<\/em><\/a>, and Bauhaus Brasil<\/em><\/a> are examples of this approach. As an inveterate gallery- and museum-goer, I also admire the aesthetic of tile artists, hard-edge and color-field painters, Josef and Anni Albers, Carmen Herrera, Sonia Delaunay, and such graphic designers as Walter Dexel and Walter Allner.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
I\u2019ve had a varied career: as a hand bookbinder; grant writer; teacher and blogger at Bookmaking with Kids<\/em>; author of books about kids\u2019 software; marketing writer for Silicon Valley companies; newspaper columnist; national editor for the Associated Press. No doubt this changeability has predisposed me to quilty experimentation!<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
