Despite the calm of its two colors, Quadrille has a lot of movement and even conjures the sense of a pinwheel in motion.

That’s due in part to the grey polygons at the center of the quilt, which in fact resemble the blades of a windmill.

More directionality comes from strong diagonal lines that traverse the quilt from corner to corner.

And in a counterpoint to the quilt’s horizontal orientation, vertical matchstick quilting helps complete the illusion of motion.
