Homage to Herrera

This small quilt is my homage to Carmen Herrera, a spectacular painter of minimalist, geometric abstractions who is still going strong at age 103(!).

I love the simplicity and intensity of her work … her crisp, interlocking forms … the drama and complexity she achieves with just two colors.

Marginalized by the New York art establishment for much of her career, Herrera garnered a burst of attention around her centenary. I was lucky enough to see some of her paintings at the Lisson Gallery in Chelsea in 2016, and later that year the Whitney mounted a solo exhibition, Carmen Herrera: Lines of Sight. The documentary film, The 100 Years Show, Starring Carmen Herrera, is a must-see.

Homage to Herrera is currently in a new online exhibition at Visions Art Museum. The show, called Links, includes 20 quilts that will be featured through the end of the year.
