Patch of Blue | Small Studies

Patch of Blue was inspired by Gwen Marston’s Small Studies series and her lively construction techniques, in this case, repeatedly inserting narrow slices of fabric. Because it was created for an exhibition titled Blue, fabric choices were crucial for achieving contrast and drama in a (mostly) monochromatic palette. This quilt gets both a serene, brushed-suede look from hand-dyed muslins and visual excitement from pops of polished ombré cotton.
