Following a three-month run at the Texas Quilt Museum, the exhibition will be at its Bay Area venue through April 15, with an opening reception on Saturday March 11 from 1–3 p.m., and remarks by juror Sandra Sider at 2 p.m.
Featuring work by regional members of the Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA), the show presents the unique character of the West Coast in a variety of diverse materials, subjects and surface-design techniques. Connotations of “fringe” include areas on and near the Pacific Rim, looking toward Asia; the geography and topography of California and Nevada as western limits of the continental United States, and artists pushing the boundaries of their medium. “This exhibition exemplifies some of the more interesting work being done today by SAQA members,” said Sider.

]]>I’m not sure I’ve ever chatted nonstop for three hours before(!) … but it was wonderful talking to people about the designs and techniques and fabrics in the 29 quilts on display.
I was honored to get a write-up and 41(!) stellar photographs by Carol Van Zandt on her blog, The Plaid Portico. Here’s what she had to say:
I’ve run across Cathy Miranker’s quilts in other California shows and they always make it on the blog – they are modern, original, thoughtful and with an attention to detail that doesn’t compromise any improvisation. A wonderful body of work is represented in this show, and I hope to see more shows from modern quilters in this space!
I mounted the show with the help of the smiling young woman, above, my daughter Emily, who flew in for the weekend from New York City. THANKS so much for your keen eye, artistic flair, good humor … and handiness with a level and a hammer!

]]>“On the Fringe: Innovative Art Quilts from California and Nevada” opened at the Texas Quilt Museum on June 30, 2016 for three-month run. Featuring 20 art quilts by members of the Studio Art Quilt Associates
(SAQA) in the region, including my piece “Sorta Sonia”, the show presents the unique character of the West Coast in a variety of diverse materials, subjects and surface-design techniques.
Connotations of “fringe” include areas on and near the Pacific Rim, looking toward Asia; the geography and topography of California and Nevada as western limits of the continental United States, and artists pushing the boundaries of their medium. “This exhibition exemplifies some of the more interesting work being done today by SAQA members,” said museum Curator Sandra Sider, who also juried this exhibit.
“Speaking for myself,” said museum Manager Julie Maffei, “it is one of the most intriguing and engaging SAQA exhibits we’ve had. I love the multiple interpretations and points of view of On the Fringe. The depth of thought expressed through the medium of these quilts is a wonderful experience. To me, this expression is one of the most important functions of art, to provoke thought and dialogue.”

]]>I’m one of 18 fiber artists whose work will appear in “On the Fringe,” a traveling exhibition sponsored by the Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA). My piece, Sorta Sonia, honors the aesthetic of the Russian-born
French artist and textile designer Sonia Delaunay (1885–1979).
Recently the subject of retrospectives in Paris and London, Delaunay is known for her profusion of colors … a “mash-up” of geometric shapes (often juxtaposing freehand or fractured circles with wonky rectangles and squares) … swathes of irregular stripes and rhythmic, wavy lines … and fabric design that mimicked the look of hand embroidery.
“On the Fringe” celebrates the art quilts and artists from SAQA’s Northern California/Northern Nevada Region. The work—whether representational or abstract—uses diverse materials and a variety of surface design techniques, such as photography, painting, dyeing, stitch resist, screen printing and more. Artists selected by juror Sandra Sider include Karen Balos, Nancy Bardach, Maria Billings, Giny Dixon, Joan Dyer, Margaret Fabrizio, Kathy Grady, Ann Grundler, Jennifer Landau, Karin Lusnak, Denise Oyama Miller, Cathy Miranker, Sharon Rossi, Nancy Ryan, Lin Schiffner Rickie Seifried, Gail Sims and Martha Wolfe.
The show’s first venue is the Texas Quilt Museum, from June 30–September 25, 2016. It will also be shown at the Harrington Art Gallery in Pleasanton, CA, from March 9–April 15, 2017. A catalog is available from Amazon; click here and following the link.
